A couple years ago, Manhattan architect Luke Clark Tyler, lived in a 96 square foot apartment. Instead of upsizing with his latest move, he chose to squeeze himself and his belongings into even less space. Luke now lives in a 78 square foot shoebox studio. It’s too narrow to fit a bed lengthwise, but using a bit of plywood and 2x4s he built his own custom bed/couch. He keeps his clothes, plates, microwave, books, spices and shaving and cleaning supplies in a large built-in cabinet. The rest of his kitchen is a tiny refrigerator that helps hold up his desk (he works for home as a contract architect). While he admits he misses being able to cook a real meal- though he’s vegetarian so eats a lot of vegetables and nuts and can even microwave eggs- Luke doesn’t see living small as a sacrifice. He loves living in the heart of New York City- his place is in Midtown Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen- and he likes paying just 0/month (cheaper than the shared housing he could find in the area). That’s up 40% from a year ago, but there’s a new way to avoid all that as CBS News correspondent Priya David reports in our series Dollars and Sense. Janine Cain prides herself on a tidy home. Her finances, however, are in a state of disrepair, ever since her husband lost his full-time job and their mortgage payments rose. Now they’re working four jobs between the two of them – but it’s not enough to pay off their credit card bills. “It wasn’t any extravagant items that we went out, or jewelry, or TVs or anything like that,” Cain said. “It was basically stuff to live with.” How high is their credit card debt? “It’s around 000 total for both of us,” Cain said. The Cains are part of a growing group economists call the “near-bankrupt.” On Main Streets across America, as jobs dry up and adjustable-rate mortgages increase, consumers are taking on more credit-card debt to try and bridge those gaps. “The average American household has assumed unprecedented levels of debt. While Cassie and Charles are driving, Two racist teens guys smash into Charles’s car on purpose. Then one of them makes a racists comment to Cassie and Charles begins beating up the guys, and Cassie tries to hold him. The police then come and arrest him and then release him. Eddie informs Cassie that the police wants to question her and Charles about Mac’s death and Charles and Cassie lie. Eddie finds a little girl in a crack house by herself and he brings to her the hospital. Jenn decides to let her stay at their house for the night. While everyone is asleep, the girl takes food, Tay’s insulin, drinks, some of Lizzie’s clothes and leaves. Tay wittnesses this, but doesn’t see her take the insulin. The next day Tay’s stomach doesn’t feel good and he thinks it’s because of Egg Rolls at the Chinese Resturant he works at. Lizzie is starting high school and has to share with middle schoolers because their school’s damages form the earthquake hasn’t been repaired. Charles hasn’t said anything about the money he found in The Sutton’s old house. This video was sent to me and it is about a call from a mortgage company in California using a telemarketing company as the middle-man to make the initial phone call. Once the telemarketer gets his clients hooked he transfers the call to the mortgage broker. The funny thing about this call is that the telemarketer is a funny old guy that makes no sense, he repeats sentences over and over trying to prove a point and then he transfers the call over to the mortgage broker/loan officer who can get his broker to “push” some guidelines in order to get the loan through. It definitely does not sound very ethical but funny nonetheless. After he is done the telemarketer gets on the line happy thinking that he will get paid for sealing the deal on that mortgage call.
